Durga Puja is by far the biggest and most popular festival of the Bengalis. This is probably the only community puja (worship) in India and Bengalis can very well claim credit for its invention (barowari puja).
In a way Durga Puja epitomizes Bengali spirit and culture. Durga Puja is not just a “puja” (or a religious occasion). Bengalis have made it a festival and carnival all rolled into one.
Durga Puja is emerging as a big entertainment industry with various cultural fests, puja competitions, beauty contests, food festivals and even puja tourism coming up. Soon, probably, Bengali youngsters will also indulge in “puja dating” along with “pandal hopping” – and probably there is nothing wrong in it!
