Poush Sankranti is celebrated in the peak of winter. It is a harvest festival where people used to celebrate the year's production of rice by treating themselves and friends and relatives with a special sweet-dish made from rice and milk ("payash" )
Since winter is the most comfortable season for outdoor vacation in a tropical country like India, Poush Sankranti is celebrated with many fairs ("Poush Mela" ) where apart from food and other goodies, there are various cultural festivals specially songs from a wandering tribe of musicians of Bengal called "bauls".
Poush Melas are becoming hot tourist destinations specially those who want to enjoy village tourism.
